Mack ‘bulldog’ AC

Rainy day. Time for some more (indoor) car history.

Mack is an American brand, now owned by Volvo. The M above is from a post WWI truck. During the war 2000 US trucks went to the British who were very pleased with it’s performance. They nicknamed it ‘bulldog’ because of it’s toughness and the shape of the blunt hood.

The name ‘Bulldog Mack’ stayed but the dog would not appear on any truck until 1921 when it was first place on the side.

In 1932 the chief engineer Alfred F. Masury found himself bored due to medical issues. He then carved the first onamental dog. That same year the first Mack with hood ornament was born.

It has evolved in placement, design and function. On modern trucks the bulldog is a handle to open the hood.

As you can imagine I’ve always had a weakness for the brand.
