SFiP experiment by mastermek

SFiP experiment

Ok. A bit bored and no image for today. With some dumb remarks from fellow 365'ers about SOOC in my head I thought of starting the 405th discussion about the subject. I will not.

Instead I did a small experiment in search for the absolute limits of my iPhone 4 camera. The phone is great with low light, ahum, so the test is with just a yellow lightbulb. I used a tripod to get my images as sharp as possible. I had to snap the very best possible picture I could get by saving the raw data from the sensor. Unfortunately Apple does not allow us to do so although there are a few app claiming to get very close. I bought one.

I took a few dozen pictures with new app, the standard camera and Hipstamatic. The images were compared in PS. The photo from Hipstamatic was of course heavily edited but the other two are, in my honest opinion very SOOC. Or beter SFiP (Straight From iPhone). There was no difference. Next, I tried the new app saving the lowest possible JPEG compression instead of TIFF. Again there was no difference between any of the pictures. I did the same experiment in broad daylight. The result showed a little less grain but again without mutual difference. It seems that my iPhone 4 images will be crap no matter what and Apple should give developers access to the sensor data. Or I could buy a 4S or 5 with better sensors. Or I could start reusing my Canon...

In quality, Hipsta's are not inferior to regular iPhone photo's, disregarding any thoughts about random autofiltering (that's just what my project is about)...

In the frame above you can see the TIFF, upper left, saved as an uncompressed JPEG at half the original size (oh, eh, and than again resized and rasterized by 365). Upper right is an enlargement from the original TIFF where you can see the typical JPEG dithering. Bottom left is the same detail shot with a macro lens and bottom right is taken with the same macro lens + 6x digital zoom. Pretty happy with the latter two.

Have a nice weekend.

@houdiniem Haha. It's not the discussions. They're fun. It's the people :-)

Smiling. Your first comment on one of my pics: I see you are, unlike me, a people-and-pet-person :-)
Cool study on TIFF, SOOC and all those other acronyms I must go look up now!
