A memorial east of Cardwell Hall on the KSU campus commemorates the tornado rebuilding effort after a 2008 tornado.
"On June 11, 2008, a tornado ripped through Manhattan, causing an estimated $25 million in damages to the K-State campus. Some 26 buildings sustained damage — mostly roofs, mechanical systems on roofs, windows and doors. The beautiful landscaping also was extensively damaged in places, with the campus losing more than 200 trees. Alumni, friends and corporate partners responded quickly and generously, giving just under $300,000 to the restoration effort."
"The trees damaged in this area [where the memorial is placed]were part of a shelter belt planted between 1890 and 1900 that delineated the northern boundary of campus."
Very cool! Kind of looks like a basketball hoop and a tornado. My hubby spent a good bit of time from 2003-2005 at Ft. Riley. We spent summer of 2005 there with him. The realtor in Junction City wanted to rent us a trailer...and couldn't understand why I didn't want to spend the summer in KS in a trailer.
