Church History

My get pushed partner, Saskia @saskia gave me the challenge of "church windows." My church has some lovely windows, but I decided for this to concentrate on the dedications at the bottom of the windows -- by the people whose contributions paid for their purchase and installation. After mass today, I went up one side and down the other, taking pictures of those dedications. There are a few others, way up high and on windows in the vestry, but this is most of them.

Seven Dolors Church was built in 1920 and is coming up on 100 years a few years from now. (Before that the parish met in the small original church building they had bought from the Methodist church, when the Methodists outgrew it.) We (the parish) are in the process of repairing, upgrading things like heating, sound system, etc, and making alterations to make the space more accessible. They also plan to bring the style of decoration back closer to what it was originally. In the mid to late 60's it was updated when the Second Vatican Council made the mass more accessible and relevant to the congregation by changing from Latin to English and turning the altar around so the priest no longer had his back to the people.

Among the dedications, we see the Peak, Glenn, and Clark families, who lived out in the rural community my dad grew up in east of town. Bridget Clark was a first cousin of my grandfather. Her mother, Bridget (McCoy) McCann, was my great-grandfather's sister. The Newman Club at KSAC appears on the top left. KSAC stands for Kansas State Agricultural College -- the original name of what is now Kansas State University.
I love stained glass windows. The church I attend, and actually many of the churches in the area are of an architectural style that doesn't use stained glass.

@saskia Here is something for the challenge you gave me. I tagged you last night, but must not have pressed 'post' because I don't see it this morning. I hope you're not disappointed that I didn't post the prettiest parts of the windows.

What a perfectly wonderful way to meet your challenge. It makes a beautiful diptych. You have done a most excellent job with this photo Mary

I love stained glass windows. I think they add to the spiritual ambiance of the church.
I'm your get-pushed partner this week Mary. For your challenge this week, how do you feel about photographing things that are circular? Another shape would fine as well, but look for one specific shape in things around you

Circles is perfect. I will be busy this week getting ready to go up to MN and then actually going there on Thursday for the weekend -- going up to Crypticon (horror movie convention) with our son. We always have a good time and I should come back with some good pictures. Circular stuff sounds like it's open enough to find subject here before we leave and also at the hotel. Hopefully I'll be able to post something for you from the hotel. If not, I'll post after we get back . (We should be back 1/2 way through Monday.)
