Red-winged blackbirds are my favorite kind of bird, so I was super excited to see a couple at the bird feeders and bird bath in my friends' back yard up in Wisconsin. I've never been so close to one. I breathlessly told my friend what I'd seen and he said "well, yeah..." OK, so it's not such an exciting event for him. But I live in town and would never get one at my feeder. Have seen them in the area where I live in Kansas, and once saw some in a drainage ditch in town, but backyard feeder...nope.
My camera's only got 4x optical zoom (which doesn't do too much more than correct for the backed out wide view it normally gives me in an attempt to equal my eyes' peripheral vision. This is a crop to enlarge the bird a bit. Someday maybe I'll have a camera with powerful zoom capabilities. THEN I'll really bag me a red-winged blackbird.

I always look for them (flying across the highway or perched on wires) as I'm driving on one of my trips up to Wisconsin (usually twice a year) and know it will be a good trip as soon as I've spotted one.
