Composition or Purpose?  by mej2011

Composition or Purpose?

Today's shot didn't turn out as planned at all. I came across these really large champagne bottles and wanted to photograph them to show their size. I took the photo on the left, which I feel is composed well, however the bottles look average size to me, which defeats the purpose of the photo. I then took the photo on the right, which shows the size of the bottle, but lacks in composition. So, is it better to post a photo that looks good, even if it wasn't what you were going for conceptually?
I think the shot on the right is awesome. It really makes me think what the hell is going on :-) And there is a nice composition, all the cupboards and ovens frame the bottle nicely, floorboards lead to it... Shot on the left is fine too, but it just looks like your about to start some heavy drinking ;-) I didn't help you at all with your question, sorry :-)

@janmaki
You did help with the question, you gave your opinion that there is in fact some compositional elements to the photo on the right, which I failed to notice. Thanks! :) Oh, and the bottles are all empty, so no need to worry about me drinking heavily. lol.

Oh so you'd already finished the heavy drinking then?.....
I like the shot on the right - all that empty space and those leading lines are very appealing to me. Plus I like the pale tones of it. Nice one. I can see what you were going for on the left though, but you're right, it just doesn't show the scale.

@pwallis
SHHHHHHHHHH! That was supposed to be a secret.
I like the empty space and leading lines, I just wish I could have edited out the appliances. I have a thing about clutter.
It's interesting how sepia looks different depending on the program used.

@mej2011 Wookie says: "in Picnik you can select the sepia tone yourself!" You could've shot the right pic from lower angle to hide the clutter and at the same time increase the effect of floorboards. I think low angle also could emphasize the size of the bottle...

@janmaki
What do you mean you can select the sepia tone yourself? It's really hard to shoot at a lower angle from a sitting position, but you're probably right.

@mej2011 click the Sepia effect in Picnik and "Sepia tone" palette opens, all the brown tones at your disposal... How about sitting on the floor ?

@janmaki
Ha! I never noticed that. I'm such a dork. Thanks! Sitting on the floor would probably work, I'm just lazy. lol.
June 9th, 2011
@mej2011 You're not a dork ! How about sitting on the floor shooting something like that bottle, and your feet would be visible sticking out in the pic ? Replace the bottle with shoes and be barefooted. Just another dorky idea :-)

@janmaki
That's an awesome idea, and I will do something that spectacular once you write your how to gimp book and send it to me. :)
June 9th, 2011
@mej2011 That idea doesn't need gimp, just do it! :-) It might take a while with that book... :-P

WOW!

@janmaki
what do you mean just do it? HOW???????? I had actually thought about taking the wine glass from the first photo and putting it in the second, but I didn't know how.
@bfmassey
Thanks Billie! I think, I hope WOW! is a good thing. lol.

@mej2011 , YES!
June 9th, 2011
Ummm.... just sit on the floor with feet on the front so that they are in the pic. Shoes are further on the floor, focus on them and snap. You'll have your blurry feet in the pic with the focused shoes. That's what I had in mind :-)

@janmaki
Ohhhhhhhhhhh. See, when you said replace the bottle with the shoes, I thought you meant take a photo of the bottle and then crop it out and blend in the shoes. See....again, I'm a dork.
June 9th, 2011
@mej2011 No, you're a complex thinker. I'm a simpleton.

@janmaki
Complex thinker. HA! That's a new one.
