Ham bone's distant cousin by mej2011

Ham bone's distant cousin

For those of you who don't know, according to @pwallis and @janmaki , the "best" photo I've ever posted on 365 is my ham bone shot which can be seen here: http://365project.org/mej2011/365/2011-01-02
From time to time I am asked to re-create this masterpiece. There will NEVER be another ham bone quite like that one, so I decided I'd introduce everyone to the turkey bone.
Happy Thanksgiving All!
Who's your other mystery fav'er? I had to take a little break from visiting with family just to come on and Fav this, saw it earlier on my newsfeed and was dying to Fav. What a masterpiece! You know, it's actually a testament to your improvement, comparing this to Hambone. But Hambone will always be my first photographical love. However, I am stoked that you finally saw the light and recreated it. The composition, the background, the lighting! Magical!

@pwallis
That's my daddy. You know, I knew the ham bone was bad, but I had no idea how bad until I took this shot and compared the two. I actually like this one. Thanks so much for the comment and fav, now go enjoy your family! How's the pup today?
November 25th, 2011
Yeah, there's definitely improvement in technical aspects. Fav, this is really cool and even a bit abstract. Still, the original ham bone has the X-factor.... that indefinable something which draws you in and never lets you go away :-)
November 25th, 2011
@janmaki
So I should just make the rest of my shots crappy too so that they'll have the "x factor"? lol.
that x-factor is called lack of skill my dear. lol. It's interesting that you see this an abstract manner. I'm a bit too literal, to me it's just a bone of a bird. Thanks!
November 25th, 2011
@mej2011 crap is definitely not the x-factor :) The left side of the pic has some "explosion" thing going on, made me think of how it would look with bright reds and yellows ... :-) And 3 shots of mine on the Jani Page ? Awesome :-)
November 25th, 2011
@janmaki
The only way I know how to do it, which is with Picnik's dual tone effect, it kind of boring with yellows and reds. Although I kind of like it with black and red. I'm sure had something more creative in mind though.
Yes 3 shots on the Jani page. I meant to tell you that on here, I don't know why I went to FB. Sorry about that.
November 25th, 2011
@mej2011 haha no need to be sorry :) And the explosive edit I had in mind involved GIMP, layers and free hand painting :) In other words, a layer over the pic, set it on overlay and start airbrushing bright colors on top of that bone.
November 25th, 2011
@janmaki
Ha ha, No! I tried that and it was like graffiti got hit by a tornado.
November 25th, 2011
@mej2011 LOL sounds like x-factor ;-)
November 25th, 2011
@janmaki
That must be it.
November 25th, 2011
I wasn't really digging the ham bone but I think you are over the top with your turkey bone!
November 26th, 2011
@buttercup
Over the top in a good or bad way? Ha ha.
November 26th, 2011
Terrific capture!
November 28th, 2011
@grammyn
Thank you Katy!
November 28th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
Can we talk about this photo, since I think this photo actually looks as if I know what I'm doing when it comes to camera? Ha ha.
November 29th, 2011
@mej2011 Sure. What do you like/dislike about this photo?
November 29th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
It doesn't matter what I like/dislike about this photo. What do YOU like/dislike about this photo? You're the one with the knowledge.
November 29th, 2011
@mej2011 Ugh. Honestly? There is nothing I like about this photo. Which is why I wondered why you picked this one out? I've seen much better photos from you. :/
November 29th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
DUDE! What is wrong with this photo? I'm so confused.........What's one better photo you've seen from me, because I think we pretty much established today that I suck.
November 29th, 2011
@mej2011 This photo...is overexposed, I think from a flash you must have fired from your camera. The focus is soft. And the photo is just a ham bone. OK...but what's the story? Why the flat angle? Why the black background?

And I'm actually asking. If I can understand what you liked about this photo, I can help you shoot better photos. :P You know I want to help.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
First of all, the photo is a turkey bone, not a ham bone. Second of all, there is no story other than it's a joke between Jani, Paula, and myself because my actual ham bone shot was BAD, even I can see that it was bad, and that's saying something.

Yes I used the flash on my camera, because in the ham bone shot, one of the problems was the lighting. The flat angle is because I couldn't get it to sit any other way. And I hate my tripod, so I didn't want to attempt an above shot. The black background is because I felt like it would have blended in too much with everything else. The soft focus thing, I don't know, to me, the way I see it, it looks no different than your cheesecake photos. And I"m not trying to a smart alec or anything, they all honestly look soft to me.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 OK sorry it took me so long to come back to this. Got swamped there for a bit. Thank GOD my migraine is completely gone now. Those things hurt so much.

OK...if a photo doesn't have a story, forget it. But this one does have a story. It's a joke, something playful.

What I mean by the angle is that just because the bone had to sit flat doesn't mean you had to stand over top of it. Get low, shoot from a different angle, use a canted angle. The black background was OK but dull. Food is normally served on plates! But that thing on a dark plate with a black background.

Does this help any? And I'm sorry for the delay :(
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
I'm glad you're feeling better. I had a killer migraine yesterday, so I feel your pain.
If a photo doesn't have a story forget it? So no more bird shots? I don't have any stories to tell.

Canted angle? No idea what that means. I know I need to work on angles and what not. There is only so low I can go in my chair. Dark plate with the black background is less dull? Okay, totally random question, you know how it's wrong ( I don't know if it's necessarily illegal) for a customer to photograph products in a store without the store's permission? Does that apply to you photographing your food in restaurants, or do you get around that because you're Jason and you're awesome?

No need to apologize, I can be patient, sometimes.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 Isn't that a bird that visits you often? That is a story. I shot a photo tonight of flames on a fire. That is a story. Stories are every where, you just have to think of how to present them.

A canted angle is just a crooked angle. Done right it can add intrigue to a photo.

Haha...that was a bit random, but a good question. I get around that because I always get the manager to sign a property release. When I tell them I am awesome...erm I mean I'm a travel photographer they are happy to work with me. They know if a magazine is doing a story on Myrtle Beach restaurants and they come to my site it is a good chance their store will be featured so they are happy to work with me.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
Yes I routinely see the same birds. I'd guess I'd say then that a lot of my photos have stories to them. I just don't usually think about the stories.
crooked angle, I'll have to think about that one.
So you carry property releases with you when you go to like mcdonald's ?
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
Did you see this yet? http://365project.org/discuss/general/9482/the-big-twelve
I can only think of about 4. :(
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 Eww. I don't want stinkin' photos of MacDonalds haha
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
You know what I mean. dork.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 Nerd.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
I love nerds.. Good candy.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 Hmmmmm...candy.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
Yeah. The closer we get to Christmas, the more I miss my store.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 The closer we get to Christmas, the more I want to disappear.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
That's the spirit.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
So what should I take a photo of tomorrow?
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 Do something you have never done before. Challenge yourself to something new!
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
Anything that I've never done, is because I don't know how to do it, and I doubt I can learn anything overnight.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 I do. That's what I do. I look up a few tutorials, get on Flickr to see what has already been done, and then do my own. What is your schedule like tomorrow?
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
My schedule? I have none. lol. I have no job, and my school work just needs to be done by Sunday so.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 Hmm...OK...I was going to suggest you take a portion of your normal day and find a photo to shoot. Doing school work? Shoot a photo of your textbook. Look up on Flickr something like "books" or "study" find a photo that appeals to you and do it.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
You know, you're not the first one to suggest that. I just think it would look rather boring. Last week, I was writing part of a story that I've been working on for a while, and I had an idea of having the camera behind me, shooting over my shoulder as I was working on. That was an epic fail.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 Why was it an epic fail?
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
The focus was way off, even by my standards. I was using my tripod, and I've said a billion times I hate tripods. I'd like to try it again someday though.
November 30th, 2011
@mej2011 OK...so you hate tripods. Forget that for now. I want you to shoot a photo of your work desk, set up nicely, with some natural light hitting it.
November 30th, 2011
@jasonbarnette
Natural light......My definition of that is sunlight? What do I do if it's raining...again.?
