Snowflakes by mej2011

Snowflakes

Okay, these are flowers and not snowflakes, but they look like snowflakes to me.

Editing consisted of Picmonkey's yester-year effect.
Lovely focus Melissa. The white stands out so well.

Beautiful!

not so - the focus here is genius. I don't even look back at my photos, they'd make me feel ill.

@chewyteeth
I hate this photo, I feel as if more of the white flowers should be in focus than just the center.

Thanks Jeff!

your f-stop is a f4.0, perhaps bump it up to say around f8.0 for a little more depth in those flowers???

@bobfoto
I will keep that in mind. I'm still not at all confident about setting the settings myself.

@mej2011 - the camera won't bite. ;)

@bobfoto
No, it'll just spit out crappy photos.
June 4th, 2012
@mej2011 - the camera is smarter then we think... try aperture mode, set the WB and the ISO on Auto and just play around with the f-stop and keep the same composiiton. Focus on your flower using the auto-focus, try f-(number as low as your camera will go
June 4th, 2012
@mej2011 - ooops, I hit enter.

say f2.8 or f3.5 and take the shot, then start raising the f-stop to say f8.0 and then f11 and then f16 and then f22. You will notice straight away that the shutter will open longer and if you have enough natural light, then you should be able to macro and hold steady the entire spectrum.

Then download the images in order and just check out the crappy photos your camera spat out.

@bobfoto
I have no doubt that the camera is smart. It is the person operating the camera that I am concerned about. lol.
I've been trying the last two days to get photos using aperture priority mode, and they are all either too light are too dark. I don't get it. I can turn the camera on programmed mode, and take a fine shot. Then, I use the same exact settings in manual mode and it turns out all wonky.

Are cameras supposed to go up to f 22? I think I've only ever seen mine go F 8.
June 4th, 2012
@mej2011 - Hmmm, some cameras and I am generalising here, will set limits. Like my camera on Auto ISO will only ever go to ISO 800, and I have to get all manual on it to set it to ISO 1600, ISO 3200 etc etc... Perhaps your camera is similar... On aperture mode, can you dial in a higher f-stop then f8.0?
June 5th, 2012
@bobfoto
I never mess with the ISO in my camera because it's on a completely different menu than all the other settings, so I forget about it.

Nope, I can only ever get an f 8.0.
June 5th, 2012
@mej2011 - odd. Hmmm? I need to think about this now.
June 6th, 2012
@bobfoto
It's okay, I've never understood my camera either.
June 6th, 2012
@mej2011 - the only thing I can think of, is because of the size of the glass, you are limited in only f8.0 - what is the lowest it can go to? f2.8?
June 6th, 2012
@bobfoto
Yes, 2.8 is the lowest. I had a conversation on here once with someone(I forget who) about the whole size of glass thing. I still don't understand it, but that's probably the issue.
June 7th, 2012
@mej2011 - without light, we wouldn't see. And the fact that our eyes work by translating all the light that reflects, refracts, bounces off of objects means we can see those objects. If our eyes were bigger, it may not necessarily mean we could see better, but simply that we could see better in less light.

So if you have a lens that is say 48mm in diameter and then you compare that to say one of 70mm across, then naturally one would expect more light to be able to get to your sensor in the larger bit of glass?

Now this means not much because your aperture will open to different diameters depending on your setting.
