Of all my feathered friends, woodpeckers really are my favorite. The Downy and Hairy are just so little, and fluffy, and I want to pet them. The Red Bellied are so pretty with their striking head color. This is a FEmale, downy, I think ( I will never know the difference between hairys and downys, I fear.) (Thanks to @nanalisarocks for catching my gender error.)
SHE was hanging out at a weird angle, so I shot this at a weird angle. No idea if it works or not. Editing consisted of a small crop in Ribbet.
He looks tiny! And so cute. And I'm so impressed by the fact that you captured him. :) I would like to see some more space above his head, but other than that, I think the composition (especially the wonkiness of it) works fine. :)
@joa
Yeah I thought about the whole space above head thing AFTER I cropped. I think if I had done a rectangular instead of square crop, it would have worked better.
@mej2011 Ouch. :D I do all my editing, umm, what's the term... Can't think of it now. Oh well, so that the original isn't harmed. Aperture is good for that. I can always go back and re-edit from the original.
@joa
Aperture is the name of an editing program, I assume. I have the capabilities to NOT save over the original, I just don't. lol. I'm notoriously horrible at deleting off my memory card, so if I saved the original and the edit, I'd be over capacity in no time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. The other day I actually deleted a bunch of photos. Went from over 1,000 to about 200.
Really great focus! I love woodpeckers too, although I haven't even started to figure out if we have downy or hairy--but we do have one that looks a bit like yours!
Thanks, Melissa! I've caught the Red-Bellied at the feeder, we also have the brown ones that peck at the ground a lot, (I'll think of their name soon) but they haven't come by yet this year, and I think the downy or hairy is the one I call the "tree-crawler" Yes, I should learn their proper names, shouldn't I?
@anwan
Brown woodpeckers?????? A Northern Flicker maybe? A great tool that I've found is www.whatbird.com . Clicking on their "expert" tool you can get pictures of birds in your area that are a specific color, shape, etc.

Yep. Brilliant, I know. :)

I've had a few in my yard, but I don't see them nearly as often as I'd like.
I knew that, really I did! lol. Thanks for catching my error!
That railing is right on my back porch, probably less then 5 feet away from where I shoot inside. The camera I use only has the one lens (I think they call it a bridge camera) http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-P100-Vibration-Reduction-Black/dp/B0034XFG86/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364621719&sr=8-1&keywords=nikon+coolpix+p100
Thank You! Much Appreciated!
