Hi there! by meotzi

Hi there!

Skunk cabbage blossom peeks out from behind its leaf.
Does it stink? It has that look about it - plus the name is a hint!

aha! I'm putting a similar thing on - which I have just learned to call Lords and Ladies. Yours looks as though it's hiding, waiting to attack!

@narayani Yes, the eastern skunk cabbage does have a strong smell. There's truth in the description of skunky beer and skunky coffee. Skunk cabbage is a fascinating plant though. It's thermogenic and melts its way up through the frozen ground and snow in early January. Inside the hood of the flower the temperature can be 35C even in sub-freezing weather.

@anniesue Your Lords and Ladies look like our Jacks in the Pulpit. Different genus though. I think Lords and Ladies are thermogenic like the easter skunk cabbage and the corpse flower. Got to attract those flies, I guess.

Wow. That is quite incredible. I have also not heard of thermogenic plants before. How clever!
