This is a satellite view of the bomb cyclone that we are experiencing, the first major storm of 2018. It is basically a winter hurricane and comes from bombogenesis, a popular term used by meteorologists, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

It "occurs when a midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies," or quickly drops in atmospheric pressure, marking the strengthening of the storm, the agency said.

"This can happen when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, such as air over warm ocean waters," NOAA said. "The formation of this rapidly strengthening weather system is a process called bombogenesis, which creates what is known as a bomb cyclone."

Bombogenesis, which often occurs over the ocean, comes from the words bomb and cyclogenesis
