This pigeon hawk had the backyard cleared in nano-seconds! Then just stayed around for a few minutes before going further to hunt his meal. Took a while for the others to come back but nothing slows them for long.
Is this a Cooper's Hawk? I'm on a bird ID forum and there are constant posts of people trying to determine if a bird is a Sharp-shinned Hawk or a Cooper's Hawk. Good photo whichever it is.
@annepann I'm just not sure - I've looked up as much as I could on the pigeon hawk which is in the falcon family (merlin) and compared it to the cooper's hawk and they seem so similar when they're not all together. I wish I had kept my other shots even though they weren't as good - just to help identify. Live and learn.
He sure looks like he is king of the fence. You are quick with that camera! Were you already in position or did you have to grab your camera and run outside? Beautiful detail in his feathers.
@falcon11 I was sitting in the kitchen watching the birds and along he came - grabbed the camera sitting there and shot through the window. Sure glad we had that new larger window put in this winter!
I was thinking more a Sharp Shinned Hawk...they are smaller than a Cooper's. It is not a Falcon...it doesn't have the black lines on the side of the face.
Either way, it is a great shot!
