Martin Houses by milaniet

Martin Houses

These gourd shaped purple martin houses are at the Huckabee Nature Center - had a self-debate whether to post these or another squirrel shot! My husband tells me that in the olden days, southerners use to cut holes in dried gourds and use them for bird houses. Thought that was interesting.
Your husband is right. Some people still do. If I had some gourds, I would make some. They look really cool. Awesome pic! I would love to have some of these, too.

This is really cool! I love the white and black on blue. Yes, in the south, or at least in the rural areas, they made/make dried gourd bird houses. They also used goards as dippers to drink water.

This is so cool! Love seeing this. I had a birdhouse made out of a beautiful dried gourd with a long curvy neck. I was very sad when it got broken!

Fascinating! Love the blue and white and the captures of the martins. I think I would be tempted to spend hours watching the comings and goings at Martin Houses.
