Spotted this (rather, smelled this) right at the end of the Low Water Bridge - the most wonderful sweet smell - almost like lilacs. Have no idea what it is, but it was both pretty and aromatic.
Beautiful shot. Great composition. This reminds me of witch hazel blossoms (they bloom early). However, I am not certain if this is witch hazel or not.
Wonderful, Milanie. I'm thinking it's witch hazel, too. Ours blooms first in the yard. I didn't realize that it has such a nice aroma, though. I'll have to check it out when ours finally blossoms!
@daisymiller@cathieg Thanks for identifying this - after I looked it up, I believe you're right. One site talked about the sweet spicy smell and another mentioned that it might flower between January and March. There is also a more reddish variety - and I saw that, too.
Lots of witch hazels have been cultivated I am sure they escape gardens and take their man made features back into the wild this one looks a cultivar with it's deep colour so that may also explain the strong scent.
