Monarch in Training

Each of the last 3 years the number of monarch caterpillars I've seen has been less than half of the previous year. There have been virtually no monarchs this year. In talking with a worker at the nature center she said their butterfly numbers were way down, also. I didn't know that monarchs need specific milkweed - not just any milkweed - and there's been very little growing anywhere this year. Mine did not do real well and I gather others had the same problem.
This reminds me of my son's 2nd grade butterfly project. Ah, such memories....he is 28 now.

Great shot- I was unaware of that "milkweed" issue. I see plenty of it growing here but have never seen a caterpillar on them. Well, now I know why!

Great capture. Haven't found any of those down here either. Although, I'm sure they're around.

Great closeup of the caterpillar. Hopefully their numbers go up again.

That's a shame about the numbers of the monarchs. But the quality of this picture is lovely.

Oh, well done on this one Milanie. The colours are fantastic, along with the focus and detail.
