Must Have Gotten a Cramp in that Leg

I was watching the pelicans and might not have noticed the heron if I didn't spot something flying and followed where he landed. Just stood around for some time - fluttered the wings, tucked the neck, and then went into this crazy pose - stayed that way a minute then put the leg back down.
Small world. I took pictures of a blue heron and some pelicans today too. Until this week, I had never seen pelicans at this nature preserve. Figured they were likely just passing through. Like your picture. Nice detail and colors. What sort of water body was that with all those rocks? Looks like the ocean. But I'm guessing its a river or lake, if its near you.

@mbrutus You're looking at the Arkansas River - the rocks are where they've shored up the drop-off just below the Lock and Dam. A little creek runs in just to the left of where he's standing. Get lots of fishermen (I've even done it a couple of times) walk down those rock to the river when they're generating at the dam.

Wonderful capture. I rarely get a sight of herons and when I do they are generally too far away.

@milaniet Thanks for the lovely description. I love their eyes. He looks sort of like a gimpy flamingo with a trick knee.
