I had to search this one out. I think it's a gaura plant - the only one in the ditch. Very unusual looking. Heat index still at 109 today - it's a take the first decent shot you can find and head back indoors month I'm afraid.
I think it's a type of cleome, rather than a gaura. They grow wild in the midwest, and there are some terrific varieties offered in nurseries. Lovely shot.
