Hope you'll read to the end. I was excited when I first saw the Sports Collage posted - then I remembered that I gave away all my good football, basketball, and track shots (did catch a few really good ones - but they went to the kids). Then I remembered the scrapbook! Now, mind you, I am totally NOT athletic (into fitness but not coordination!) but while teaching 4th grade back in 1991 I started a track club for grades 4-6 strictly on my own because I thought it might make getting fit fun for kids. Well, I usually had about 60 kids each year (for 9 years) plus their siblings when we went to meets. Practice was during recess time (learned to shot put before school using an indoor shot in the halls - only knocked out a few ceiling tiles) Watched countless videos to learn how to teach the high jump, triple jump, hurdles (which my husband and I built) - never was successful with the discus - but my greatest success was the relay. Those kids could do a handoff as good (or better) than the high school team. Our kids never lost a relay race in the 9 years! We did indoor, outdoor, and cross country. We traveled all over the state - even took some to AAU Summer Olympics in New Orleans. I posted this picture on my FB page and was so thrilled by the response from the kids that had been part back in the 90's. One remarked that this was where she learned sportsmanship, discipline, and a love of fitness. Think it was one of the best things I've ever done. (the track program - not the collage!)
Milanie, your wonderful collage and commentary are treasures! I loved reading about your accomplishments, and your passion for the children's well-being is clear. I've a feelling you've positively influenced many more than you know! This confirms what I could tell from your 365 posts...that you are a kind, thoughtful, and very special lady. I'm happy to know you even if it is only through cyberspace!
Marvelous story and great collage. Sounds like you've had a significant impact on a lot of people. Your generosity of time is reflected in your many extensive comments. It is an honour to 'know' you. Fav for multiple reasons.
Wonderful collage and love the story! Those kids were very fortunate to have you as their track coach and teacher. I'm fortunate as well to know you on 365 and receive your thoughtful and encouraging comments.
What a lovely story Milanie, and how nice to hear from your former students!
