These bromeliads bloom around Christmas, and the flowers end up looking a little like Christmas lights. What's interesting is there is a progression, from the red sheath, which gives way to the blue green tip, which opens up into a bright yellow stamen surrounded by blue petals.
I've been meaning to thin these because they're so overgrown, they is no space between them anymore, but I haven't had a chance to (and they are very pointy, so it's a difficult proposition to begin with!)
@danette@fishers Thanks! I think a gardener friend of mine gave them to me a long time ago.
@wendyfrost They're actually in a large rectangular planter (well, 2 large planters) in the yard. So technically in the backyard, but not actually in the ground. I'm sure they would do just fine in the ground, but they'd probably take over the yard!
