I couldn't believe it. This little bird was screeching and fanning his tail feathers right in front of me while I was walking across the path to a park. He either was trying to impress me or was warning me to stay away. Whichever, it was so cute. As I walked closer he did keep backing up and finally walked to the side. Lucky I had my p&s camera in by jacket pocket. I have no idea what kind of bird it is.
Great capture of this Killdeer! It's a wonder it did not feign that it had a broken wing. They will do that to draw a person's attention away from a nest.
@pamfromcalgary Thank you for the comment and for the information on the Killdeer bird. Now I know what it is. I wonder if it was feigning a broken wing. Hadn't thought of that.
Definitely a Killdeer......I've seen one use the 'broken wing' diversion to protect it's nest which is usually just a shallow area scraped out in a sandy/gravel area. They're such cool birds.
Marilyn, he is beautiful! I usually am able to ID birds but this one is a real mystery. What an incredible find. I have several field guides and will try to find him when I have a chance.
