@terryliv Hi Therry. Thank you for your comment I live in the heart of Switzerland, in a small town in the Canton of Zug. From a landscape point of view, the Region is characterised by two picturesque lakes, gentle hills and the foothills of the Alps. It is beautyiful here, even if we have a lot of fog,... but my heart goes out to all these others sides of the world. I have an extrem and incurable yearning to travel and for distant places.
@mona65 Hi Mona The reason I asked was that straight after my retirement, we spent 7 weeks in UK and Europe and for 2 weeks, we hired a car and drove around Switzerland. We stayed clear of the cities and the motorways and spent the whole time on country roads. We absolutely loved every minute of it. Switzerland is sensational and of course totally different to Australia.
We have been back to Switzerland twice since - once as part of a coach tour but just for two days and then again a couple of years ago when we attempted to revisit (by car) a couple of our favourite places but it was too early in the spring and all the roads were cut.
@mona65 Just had a look at my old road map of our travels and we went through Zug Canton towards the end of the two weeks.
We drove along the eastern shore of Vierwaidstatter(?) See through Gersau and Weggis then across to the western shore of Zuggersee through Risch and then up through Cham and north to Wohlen. WooHoo
@terryliv Hi Terry You brought me 3 smiles. Thanks. Happy you had such a good time (at least once), when you have been in Switzerland. I had wonderful travels to Australia too. We (my husband and I) are very slow travellers, so we had to re-visit several times, to see at least a glimpse of your beautiful country. We have been in separate trips to northern Queensland , Tasmania, Northern Territories, Southcoast, South West Coast and the Westcoast. A special trip a made all alone to the Pilbarra. A 5 week sabbatical, 12 years ago. (The roads have been blocked to, due high water,… Snow, Water, nature is a strong force :-)Still on our car is a sticker of the Eighty Mile Beach and of a Roo’. But I saw in your pictures that you have a similar interest in other countries we do love. Alaska, Canada,… Last year we have been a third time to Newfoundland, as we are quite keen on whales and like free lansscape, this is a wonderful spot. And the third smile was: I work in Cham. Have to leave for work when I finish this post. My home is on the east shore of the Zugersee. 20’ drive.
What are your favourite spots in Switzerland?
@mona65 That's a difficult question to answer since we enjoyed it all so much but I think it would have to be Jungfrau. When we went to Switzerland, I wanted to see the Matterhorn, The Eiger and Mont Blanc (yes I know that's in France).
Of course we saw The Eiger en route to Jungfrau and while I had read about Jungfrau, nothing could prepare us for it. I have tried on numerous occasions to describe Jungfrau to people but it is impossible. Unbelievably stunning both the trip up there and back and the Jungfrau itself.
Other favourites were our trip from Tesch up to the top of Klein Matterhorn, all the mountain passes especially Kluasen Pass and the Rhine Falls.
We loved it.
@terryliv How nice, you have seen all this stunning places in and around Switzerland. Shame on me, I have never been on the Jungfrau Joch. Strange that we rather spend the money, when we are on holidays for a whale shark snorkeling tour in Coral Bay (about the same price) then going up with the railway to Top of Europe. But we do a lot of mountain hiking, and we did several tours along the Aletsch Glacier and end up in the Concordia hut. Which is located behind the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. BTW in my sunset-rise pictures the other day Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are clearly visible in the silhouette.
@mona65 I realised after I had replied to you that I should have been saying Jungfrau Joch and not just Jungfrau. The day we were up there was absolutely stunning and we did a 2 hour hike in the snow from the main building across the top of the glacier to a small hut. We had something to eat there and then did the 2 hr hike back. It was fantastic and not a bad adventure for a couple of old Aussies who had precious little experience in the snow.
Now I just Googled Concordia Hut and I reckon that may have been the same hut we hiked to. Would that be right? If you stood at the main terminus building looking down the glacier, our walk went off to the left.
@terryliv Dear Terry I have to got to work right now. By heart I would say it is not possible to go "just like that" from the Jungfrau Joch to the Concordia Hut. I think you would have to cross a glaciar. I will look it up on a propper map tonight. BTW, we say also just Jungfrau, if we mean the Joch. It's ok,... I just wanted to be correct in my postings. You never know who is reading it. ;-)
@terryliv Okay I'm back from work and I checked on the map. I suppose you have been on the Mönchsjochhütte (Moenchsjoch hut), would also fit with your time data. For better explanation I saved two pictures on my website to illustrate the locations. http://distantplaces.jimdo.com/info-for-terry/ Link will be removed shortly, as this is my private site.
