2015-03-14 all that remaines

On our way back home,... the frozen lake Reschen. Approx. 2 km south of the Reschen Pass, which forms the border with Austria, and 3 km east of the mountain ridge forming the border with Switzerland.

The story behind the picture,...
No that's not Photoshop, ... this nowadays picturesque image is preceded by a tragic story.
The tower of the romanic St. Katharina church of the village Graun (South Tyrol, Italy) is the only "survivor" when the barrier lake Reschen was built in the 1940ies for the sake of "enforcing the national industry". It was a big tragedy for the people living in this villages and hamlets. All the houses have been destroyed (blown up) and only the tower from the 14th century has been left. In total 163 homes and 523 hectares of cultivated land were submerged, 150 families…almost 650 people were made to abandon all that they held dear and begin new lives elsewhere. All were forced to move away without indemnification or reparations whatsoever from the government. ...

An amazing story to go with this equally amazing image. Thanks for sharing!

Fabulous photo - so surreal. Yet tragic on reflection. Thank you for sharing the history of this. Very interesting, Mona.

A beautiful shot, with a story which makes me angry even now. What injustice.

Wow, what a picture, but such a sad story to go with it. I am glad that something still stands to mark the sorrow of the towns demise.

Mona! I had not seen this picture of yours. I went last year to the lake but there wasn't much water, and the photo was a lot less fascinating of both this and the other one. A belated big Fav
