The white storks (Ciconia ciconia) are back from Africa! The white stork is a long-distance migrant, wintering in Africa from the south of the Sahara to as far south as South Africa. When migrating between Europe and Africa, they avoid crossing the Mediterranean Sea and detour via the Strait of Gibraltar in the west, because the air thermals on which this large bird depends, do not form over water. Storks do not pair for life, but they remain true to the location of the nest. Once they are back and the pair situation is resolved, “love is in the air” and they copulate several times a day.
