We had a Föhn* wind storm last night. On my normal bike route two trees fell and blocked the path. But now the foehn window is still here, but the wind calmed down. And the paragliders are soaring again.
* dry, warm, down-slope wind that occurs in the lee of a mountain range.
Called differently in different areas of the world: Bergwind in South Africa, the Brookings/Chetco Effect on the southwestern coast of Oregon. Chinook (snow eater, my favorite) winds east of the Rocky Mountains and the Cascade Range in the United States and Canada, and north, east and west of the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. Foehn winds in the foothills of the southern Appalachian mountains, the Santa Ana winds of southern California, Puelche wind in Chile, Suêtes on the west coast of Cape Breton Island / Nova Scotia or Zonda winds in Argentina. Föhn in New South Wales, Australia or the Nor'wester in New Zealand, etc.
