The hidden fertile and real flowers of a hydrangea, which are unspectacular and measure only a few millimetres. They are underneath the huge sterile florets. The sterile florets are what gives the inflorescence their decorative value, but for me the tiny lil' flowers have an immens beauty.
I wonder why nature hides them? I'd think it would make it more difficult for them to get fertilized...but nature usually has a reason for doing things like that.
