@myzsteriousmizsterjones Yes, that word made me wonder. I don't really get the real meaning of it. Cheeky and saucy, too. And I have trouble understanding the saying: tongue in cheek. Is that related to cheeky? English still has many secrets. And it is even more confusing when it comes to UK vs US.
I had an interesting experience with a driver in the UK, when he asked where did I learn English because it did not sound natural. And I said that in school, but we learn Standard English in school. And he was completely puzzled what I meant by "standard English". English is English. And he had a point, didn't he?

From the dictionary, my understanding was that 'cheeky' implies naughtier or more offensive situations, less playful.
From the usage in some of the comments here, my understandig was that it implies, as you said, playfulness.
