Bit of fun tonight - Do you remember........The Daleks are scary alien mutants from the British TV show Doctor Who. They come from the planet Skaro, where they used to be called Kaleds. Now, they move around in tough, tank-like robots and want to take over and destroy everything in the universe. They are the biggest enemies of the ‘Doctor, a Time Lord’, and have become super powerful over time, even strong enough to fight against the Time Lords and try to control the whole universe.
I first encountered "The Daleks" around 1964, and they scared the living daylights out of me. The story featured an old guy called the Doctor who landed on their home planet, Skaro. After a short but terrible nuclear war over 500 years ago between two cultures, one ended up horribly mutated while the "Dalek ancestors" hid in the city. The Daleks lived there, moving with electricity through metal paths. As a little boy of about 6, this was terrifying.
I thought they were gone, but these monsters kept coming back. I was scared for a good decade and hiding under my bed sheets seemed like a pretty good idea at the time, thinking it was probably the safest place if they ever came to our neighbourhood. I blame my dad for letting me watch it and the BBC for asking Terry Nation to create these nightmares for kids, which turned out to be quite popular pop culture icon in later years.
In my later years, I became a collector of all sorts of memorabilia, including key characters from sci-fi series. The Daleks were just one of them. (Even now, I sometimes look over my shoulder—a bad habit from my childhood). Here, I've tried to recreate a scene from the series with one of these metallic monsters emerging from the mists of time.
