Nice composition. I like the foreground lighting but you might want to tone it down a bit so the contrast isn't quite so much against the late day sky?

I futzed with it for quite awhile trying to adjust the lighting, but nothing was working for me tonight. It looks to me like the flash went off, but I don't remember that happening

Yeah, that's what it looked like to me too. If you look at the full exif info it should have a property that will tell you if the flash fired.
