crownish by myhrhelper

crownish

My push challenge partner this week really pushed me hard - (good thing). I was challenged to do a water drop/crown or refraction. I'm going to go for the refraction but I thought I would try this. I had to do my own weird setup. I don't have a macro lens so I had to use the lens that came with the camera (18 - 55) or lighting equipment so I used a flashlight. I'm not satisfied with this as a crown shot it only took 600 plus shots to get this.

Juliette Packham said, "hi, we've been paired for the 4th get-pushed challenge. I challenge you to take a refraction or water drop shot." She also gave links to drops which included crowns.
@sparkle
This is not going to be my final push challenge outcome but it's a start.

How many shots did this take? :o) I've tried these and ran out of memory! Awesome crown, Kathy!

great start Kathy - I've been trying these for ages - much patience and luck required - I also don't have much kit to perfect, but it is possible!!

Congratz, you managed! At http://365project.org/djepie/365/2012-01-19 you told me you wouldn't be able to do, but apparently with your new camera and more experience you did it! And it is sharp too. I think you could improve it by making it brighter and increase the contrast. Based on the small jpg: http://jaapmeijer.com/images/2012/kathycrown.jpg
I know how much efforts a 'simple' shot like this costs and therefore only tried it once. Should do it again. Maybe should participate the push-challenge too.

They are so difficult. I hope I don't get challenged to one of those. Great start.

Great shot Kathy. Good luck with your challenge.
August 15th, 2012
Great shot! I have yet to attempt a crown shot. I am so impressed you captured this without any lighting equipment! Well done!
August 15th, 2012
Nice one! These take an incredible amount of time to get just right....very cool!
August 15th, 2012
Looks like you need more light and that's it. You got the crown!
August 15th, 2012
This is soooo cool, Kathy!

I like the golden-ness.
August 15th, 2012
Great job. It could also be used for the golden theme. I haven't figured out how to do this, yet, as I don't have anything dark enough to make them stand out.

Very cool

it's a great crown, if you ask me. i tried this last month and it's not easy. i had the kitchen lighting but i took a small lamp and directed it on the water where the drop happens. then i used flash, it worked. but the one thing someone told me to make a sharper or thinner crown is to have the drop higher. i might try to do this again with you this week. but you did great with this, kathy.

@summerfield Thank you so much for the suggestions, I will try this again in the future to improve this. I like the idea of a lamp and that shouldn't be too difficult to find and having the drops higher. Summerfield in all honesty I enjoy being connected to you on 365 because I learn so much and you are also a great motivator. I also know that if there is something you see that could be better you will share that as well - I know you are like me - we have learned a lot but want to keep learning.

@myhrhelper - awww! that is so sweet, kathy. and i'm sure you know the feeling is mutual. you motivate me in so many ways. i like, no make that love working with brilliant minds!

and you might want to tag this theme-golden - looks like gold to me!

I use the same lens for water drops, etc with the settings 1/200, f8 & iso 100 & I just use my built in flash. This is great, love the pov.

@djepie If you want to join the get pushed challenge (I think you will like it) go to the get pushed 4 thread under challenges and let Jase know you want to be added. He randomly selects someone to partner with you each week. You challenge that person after looking at their photos to try something new and that person challenges you. So far it has been fun and it has stretched me to learn & grow
