This was an in camera triple exposure.
@365anne hi Anne, the earlier models of your camera had that feature, I played with it when I had the d5100. But unfortunately they removed it when they made the d5500. What you might be able to do is an in camera double exposure effect in the retouch menu where you select 2 images in camera and it will give a similar double exposure effect. I suggest you look at that menu you may have that and other cool features such as tilt shift etc.
@365anne I did a quick search your retouch menu does have some fun features such as fisheye, miniature effect and image overlay which might give you the double exposure effect (image overlay).
