'Sanitation, expiration date, question everything.'

These are my health risk cookies...or as my brother said 'it looks like Frankenstein made them(!)' There is a bit of a story behind these as you may well imagine...

So basically, I was feeling fed up and Mum was trying to think of things for me to do. But there isn't a huge amount to do when you're 17, have revision hanging over your head and you're stuck in a 'holiday centre' with crappy weather and no-one else your age. So she suggested I did some baking...

So I pootled off to the shop to buy some ingrediants. I didn't have a recipe, but I thought I could vaguely remember a biscuit recipe. So I went to get some baking marg...there wasn't any so I got some 'I can't believe it's not butter' (believe me, when baking, you definitely can!!!). And then I needed some sugar...but they didn't have caster sugar, which is what I needed, but I found some granulated so I just bought that, we had plain flour back at the chalet so I just got some smartie eggs to put in said biscuits.

Anyway, I got back, with the wrong butter, the wrong sugar and no recipe...only to find we didn't have any scales. I couldn't remember if I had the butter and sugar the right way round in the recipe in my head but I was pretty certain. The butter was easy enough, I just divided the block into 5 and used 3/5 which is what I needed. For the sugar, I measured that there was 10cm of sugar in the bag and for the amount I needed it'd be 4cm so that was okay. The problem came when I had to measure out the flour...which had already been opened. Dad helped me to make a balance scale out of a chopping board and a ruler and we used the butter as a weight on the other side to weigh out the flour :').

So finally, I had the mixture...I then realised I didn't have a rolling pin, so I just sort of flattened it with my hand and used a knife to cut biscuit shapes.

Then, I realised there were no baking trays! xD so I put them on the grill wracks and hoped for the best. ...10 minutes later, I found out that biscuits actually melt. One lot had gone through to the tray underneath and the other lot had gone through to the bottom of the oven! I formed the ones into the tray into vague biscuit shapes and put them back in the oven. The ones on the bottom of the oven, I scooped up and put into a casserole dish.

Anyway, eventually they were all cooked and I re-formed them into vague biscuit shapes on some plates. They looked an absolute mess but actually tasted quite nice xD When the children, who're with us, came back, they didn't seem to care what they looked like and the plate was cleared in about 30 seconds but I managed to snap this before that happened :p

So anyway...if you ever wanted to know how to make biscuits with no scales, the wrong ingrediants and no baking tray, now you know! xD Oh and btw, it's 3 parts marg to 4 parts sugar to 5 parts plain flour, in case you wanted to know. (so in my case 150:200:250, oh yeah, I normally cook in ounces to, to so that was entertaining xD)
Sounds like an adventure! Great shot

Naomi you are a girl after my own heart. That's how cooking is supposed to be. You sort of guess and experiment and see what happens. And if it fails, you have learned something, you've enjoyed an activity... and if there are kids about, they'll probably eat it all up and ask for more, anyway!

I think this has got to be one of the most entertaining baking stories I've read. Sorry it was such a pain, but the end result was definitely not a problem. Excellent shot of your frankenstien biscuits.
