Shedding the winter skin...
Is that really why the bark peels?

No kidding! Does the whole tree shed its outer layer?

@seacreature @meotzi @beckyk365 @anniesue oh gawd, now I've started something I do t know the answer to! A quick read of google told me this... " All mature eucalypts put on an annual layer of bark, which contributes to the increasing diameter of the stems. In some species, the outermost layer dies and is annually deciduous, either in long strips or in variably sized flakes"
As I looked at the trees yesterday I got the feeling they were growing out of their skins...I'd never thought of that before...
Random wandering of the mind... 😄

Haha! a wandering mind can be a dangerous thing! I was picturing a tree size skin laying at the foot of the tree. Hey it's Australia, all sorts of crazy things grow over there!

@narayani how do they get bigger if they shed their latest bark layer?
September 16th, 2017
@anniesue they grow taller and fatter with fresh, new bark under the old. Actually...I haven't got a clue!! 😜

@beckyk365 haha! Your wandering mind if more inventive than mine. And not everything over here is crazy is it??
September 16th, 2017
