So many lovely varieties, I'd love to have a lily pond but don't have the room added to that the frangipanis and jacaranda would make such a mess in it.
A pond sounds like an awesome plan. I have a little pond (half of a large oak barrel), with some green reeds in it. I wonder if water liliies would grow there? Should consider finding some. I just worry about breeding mosquitoes though, so I keep changing the water as I am not sure what to do without killing my plants or endangering my dogs if they happen to get to the water
@seacreature we have a native perch (fish) that eats the mosquito larvae. Don’t know if you have something similar, but a few goldfish would probably eat them too. I’m loving being able to sit and watch the fish.
@narayani I used to have some goldfish but the herons discovered an easy source of food and kept fishing them out. Perhaps it is time to try again if I can get the pump working to make sure they have sufficient oxygen
@seacreature we have granules here that you can add to standing water like pools or water barrels. It’s actually some type of bacteria that eats the larvae. It’s sold at Garden centers and home improvement stores. Not sure if it’s pet friendly.
@beckyk365@narayani Thanks for the comments. I will enquire at Stodels Nursery when I next go into Cape Town. Our local little nursery is really that - local and little, and doesn't stock much at all. Certainly not gold fish, ponds, and associated goodies
