The timber structures make this an interesting shot. Are they old piers?

Hi, the wooden structures are called groins, they are installed perpendicular to the beach to stop beach (shoreline) erosion. They can be wooden, made from steel or boulders.

Nice shot Neil. Didn't they also use to call these structures breakwaters?

I believe they did, it’s just a way of stopping the action of the waves eroding the shoreline.
