Confessions of an Amateur Photographer.

So until yesterday I have never had camera or kit envy. I have loved my little compact camera, it fits in my pocket, useful when I usually also have a pushchair, children, their belongings etc etc....in tow BUT yesterday whilst on our walk at the canal I had camera envy. There was another photographer there whilst we walking up and down and I wanted his camera, I even nearly asked him to show me his shots when we photographing the same scene so I could see what a difference his kit had made. I know the saying goes and mostly I agree its about you behind the camera not the camera that takes the shots, just yesterday I felt limited.... Had I a different lens I wouldn't have had to basically fall into a canal to get this shot.... he turned at the last moment to swim away so lost part of his beak....don't blame him I would if I had as camera in my beak. Confession over..... I'm back to normal colour, only had a tinge of green yesterday.
Stunning macro.

Brilliant macro! Love it!

Love it and it is how you capture shots in the first place
May 15th, 2014
Still a great shot, whatever camera you used.

Incredible detail for a compact camera and the photographer did an amazing job.

Wonderful close up even if you were holding your camera with big green hands, lol. So funny, you bought a smile to my face. Great shot anyway!

I know exactly where you are coming from with this, I'm always envious of those big telephoto lens some photographers have. But in terms of your compact I actually think its a really good way to start, you are learning all the skills such as composition, exposure etc, so when/if you do move up to a dslr you will already have all the knowledge.

Yes, I know what you mean. Your photo represents that, in that it has great detail and lovely colours but what are you missing...... by doing this project I have learnt more about my camera and what it can do but also its limitations, or is it that want i want from my photos has actually surpassed the capabilities of my camera

I think your photos are so creative, always have so much emotion in them. I didn't even realize you were using a compact camera. You have some amazing talents, regardless of what camera you are using! Oh and I think your duck is very pretty ;)

I didn't realise you were using a compact camera at all, your photos are always so creative, crisp and well exposed but then you don't use any compact do you, you use a LUMIX! I have the Lumix LX7, a DSLR and a system camera and the Lumix gets used the most and the quality of the lens is just the best. Great photo BTW and the lack of the beak only goes to show how close you were, the detail on the feathers is wonderful.

Great shot, I used to get camera envy as well, but to hell with that - just do what you do and keep on doing doing it!

@graemestevens @judithdeacon @gigiflower @deliad @cazla @dianeburns @macromover @oopsadaisy @daisyjuds @creativefool @carlt Thank you all for your kind words. And Judith I DO LOVE my Lumix, I really really do. I am hoping at some point to get a CSC Panasonic system some time in the possible future when funds allow I just love the way my Lumix works just want to be able to get more out of it... Anyhow I'm happy today, your comments all helped.

@newbank there is a panasonic csc, i think its called the gx1 which delena @dh uses on here and I've seen it a second hand for less then £200. Might be worth considering
May 15th, 2014
@cazla It is the gx series I am looking at....despite my envy my camera does do a lot and there is loads it can do that I don't know how to do with it....so I feel I really should get to grips with all it can do first....Where did you see it second hand?
May 15th, 2014
Just had a look at an online site I regularly use and would recommend and it's now down to £129! This is the link http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/used-equipment/used-compact-system-cameras/used-panasonic-compact-system-cameras/

@cazla Thanks that's really useful. Much appreciated.

I think losing part of the beak makes the photo more charming, somehow that the duck is that much closer to you. I think this is fantastic. Fav
May 15th, 2014
@vstap I really was close to the duck. My lens basically was where the ducks beak was.... Thanks for comments.

You've taken some excellent photos with your compact, I have the LX7 and love it,I use it just as much as my DSLR. Keep taking pictures you are doing a great job :-) Cool duck btw.
May 15th, 2014
The colour is just right. I like this with the cropped beak. It somehow brings the duck closer as if he (I think its a male) wants to get a closer look at you.
May 15th, 2014
Nice shot, I love the colours in the duck.
May 15th, 2014
@newbank @cazla I love my gx1.

May 15th, 2014
I think it all depends on the EYE - if you have it, your photos will be stunning, no matter what you use! some people have the biggest and best, but maybe not the eye for that perfect capture! Love your pov and colours!
May 15th, 2014
I have a little compact camera too and like you suffer at times from lens-envy. You have achieved wonderful sharpness here and the lighting is excellent and if the damn duck hadn't moved …. Good on you for posting this.
May 15th, 2014
@snaphappi Thanks. More ducks to come soon!
May 15th, 2014
I really like the detail and sharpness in this, and I like the crop too; it seems to give the shot more sense of movement, as if you caught the duck just swimming out ot the picture--which in fact is what you did. I hope someday you will have a chance to own a DSLR, but I do think you take fabulous pictures with what you have now.
May 15th, 2014
LOL...love the commentary and no matter what camera we have, we'll always experience camera envy...it's a curse lol. Great shot, by the way.
May 15th, 2014
Oh, yes, we all get that envy. It is something you can turn from envy into a goal - to get that camera you really want. Once you think you will get a new camera then you will change your mind 20 times. Good to know you are over being green - for now. It comes and goes.

Absolutely gorgeous duck!!! Is he a mallard?

Pat
Your story made me smile. You have great detail of the duck, if there are more to come had you better put your swimming costume on, just in case you join them. :-)
May 16th, 2014
@idbelucky That's a fab idea!
May 16th, 2014
Great shot. I love the composition. It's unique and I don't mind that his beak is cut off. It adds interest, I think.
May 16th, 2014
ha ha! great shot!
May 16th, 2014
Great close up and detail......so glad you didn't end up in the water!
