January - Self

Move swiftly past please..... my mentoring group is loosely following the below link this year.

http://petapixel.com/2015/12/30/do-this-52-week-photography-challenge-to-improve-your-skills-in-2016/

We're not all doing all of them. I'd like to improve my portrait skills this year so going to try the ideas out. Week 1 self portrait.....SOOOOOOO not my strength. Week 52 is also a self portrait, apparently I will have improved by then. Phew you won't have to see my face for another year!
You look contemplative!
Oh how weird, I have just been looking at the same challenge. I have also decided to do some of the weeks, but I haven't decided if I'll do this first week yet! I shall be following your group to see what you come up with, should be fun!

You are soo good at them, though. Your paper one was one of my all time faves:). Seriously. Cute shot of you here avoiding the camera's gaze:).

@dibzgreasley i think the plan for our group is to do the artistic ones as a group. Im planning on pushing myself to do the portraits. I suck so completely at landscspes that i might just get disheartened!! Ill be keeping an eye out for your images. Im looking at my camera screen! The others i took are horrendous!!

@amandal i contemplated a crepe paper rainbow type idea but chickened out! Think i peaked with my only other selfie!!

It's hard to top that. You should have started low;-). I sure did. My first was hideous, but funny!:)

Beautiful lighting, I love it. So nice to see you.

@newbank
You are good at portraits, especially of your boys. I'm not so great at them, so am thinking definitely about the artistic ones and maybe some of the landscapes to push myself there. In my opinion, taking a selfie is always horrendous - I hate it, but try is occasionally when I'm feeling good about how I look!

@dibzgreasley my boys are mostlu candid. Will have to get eldest to pose in some of them! Good luck witbh it. Lots looks inspiring and challenging.

Good to see you, Ruth! I like the gentle b&w and your look of concentration. I agree with Debs @dibzgreasley about your portraits of your boys, and I think that you find such interesting angles and points of view when you're shooting them, which is surely harder with a candid shot than a set-up one? And many thanks for the link - I think I'm going to have a go :)

@pistache eldest will pose but only just gets concept of stillness. 99.9 % of my shots of my boys are candid and as life is. 1% of what i shoot is worth using! Loads and loads of duds! Look forward to seeing your journey through the year too.

You must be called Arthur, as in Arthur Selfie in a beehive. I look forward to week 52.

Great light in this b/w selfie

Thanks for the link to the 52 week project... I may try some ideas within it, too. I dislike my own selfies, so good for you to have a go! This is very muted and discreet. Very nice.

Excellent processing and portrait - nicely done

Very good selfie and your course sounds good

I think this is great. I like your composition!

Nice selfie Ruth. You've been very clever here in hiding part of your face, using B&W, not looking at the camera and using shadows to your advantage. Well done you!
January 5th, 2016
Nice selfie. I love the way you are half hidden and the fact that you aren't looking at the camera. Very mysterious.
Thanks for the link.

it's a clever selfie newbank and all selfies look better in mono :)

Wow, you are so good at jumping into the hard challenges first. Well done on taking a selfie. I'd love to say I'm going to follow suit, but I don't think so!

You are such an amazing portrait photographer capturing mood wonderfully. I'm amazed by how you did a selfie with such mood and clarity.
January 6th, 2016
Wow, great work Ruth. You're such an accomplished portrait photographer! I don't think I'm game to try a selfie, but I'll think about it.

I think this is a great selfie. I don't want to wait a year to see not her great selfie! I suppose I shall have to benefit from 'delayed gratification!'
January 6th, 2016
I think this turned out great - love how the bottom of your face is obscured and how you're not looking at the camera. It really adds to the overall feeling of the shot.
January 6th, 2016
Your boy portraits are so god so you shouldn't be nervous. I think we are so critical of our own selfie, no one ever happy with how they look! I like this one!
January 6th, 2016
I like this , it has a real honesty about it , no pose , camera shy , the real you. so beautiful...
January 6th, 2016
I very much agreee with John @jack4john - I would say exactly the same words!
January 6th, 2016
From what I can see f it, this looks like a very nice face. But I feel as you do about selfies. Whenever anyone (family, friends) says that they never see pictures of me, I tell them that I am in every shot I ever made, just on the other side of the camera.

Just a reminder - if you want your entries to show up among the ones submitted by other 365-ers who want to attempt the 52-week challenge, tag this week's one as 52wc-2016-w1. The landscape will be 52wc-2016-w2 for week 2. Just a reminder :)
