I have a Speedlite 580EX (needless to say it was upgraded with the 600EX about a month after I bought it). There are more reasonably priced ones though and you will certainly notice a difference with any hot shoe mounted flash (no red eye and you can bounce for softer effects). I also bought a 'stofen' diffuser - basically a piece of plastic to fit over the flash head which softens the light.
Thanks Emma, that's interesting, I know now that the "on-board" flash is just too harsh for the effect that I like! Might try to wander to my new favourite shop in Southampton tomorrow!
