The Triumverate - Redux by northy

The Triumverate - Redux

This was posted in my alternate album yesterday in conjunction with a discussion thread seeking input. Many many thanks to all who responded with comments and suggestions - it is really helpful to get others' perspectives. I have converted to b&w and attempted to deal with light and contrast. No need to comment again.

I did want to say one thing about the sign. A few of you said you found it distracting and would try to crop it out; one or two of you thought it contributed to the scene. I tried cropping it out, but couldn't make that work and leave in the homeless person on the bench in any recognizable shape. And for me, the sign does add something - even if it's only chaos to an already complicated scene. However, I will admit to having a fondness for the irony of signs, and I accept the fact that others feel differently ;p

I am tagging this for the street photography now challenge this week: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly... I struggled a bit with which figure represented which, but in the end decided that those features are to be found in all of us and I will leave it at that...

Fantastic in b&w
June 22nd, 2012
So that is Winston? Good old Winston - hands on his hips as usual! Such an interesting and definitely good street shot!
June 22nd, 2012
@shutterbugger yes... and he was breathing... i could see it move...

@maggiemae yep... that would be Winston... with a seagull on his head and guano streaming down his face ;p tx!!!

@kerristephens tx Kerri!
June 22nd, 2012
B&W looks great! I like the sign.
June 22nd, 2012
Actually, the sign offers a little irony to your photo. Underneath the "Authorized Parking" sign is a wino parked his carcass on the bench.
June 22nd, 2012
Yep this works well to me
June 22nd, 2012
yeah, nicely done!
June 22nd, 2012
Well done!!!!
June 22nd, 2012
Fantastic - It's a really cool shot ... a lot to look at, and a really quirky scene. The b&w helps a bunch!
June 22nd, 2012
i do like this in B&W.....really cool how white you made the X on the workers shirt
June 22nd, 2012
@paulaag tx Paula... the X was always there... but it ended up quite faded in the desat version, and somehow just POPs here!
June 22nd, 2012
@beachradish tx! i think i love "quirky" :)
June 22nd, 2012
@cromwell prescisely ;p and one day, i'm going to get up the moxie to take a photo of all the smokers standing in front of the no smoking signs of our building ;p
June 22nd, 2012
@northy , yea, I remember it, but i really like the way it pops out now
June 22nd, 2012
Definitely works better in B&W...
June 22nd, 2012
Fantastic black and white.
June 22nd, 2012
there's definitely an irony to the sign if you can call sleeping on a bench parking
June 22nd, 2012
Mel
this is a great shot, a very menacing statue and it makes me wonder if it had any psychological effect on the workman making him put his hand on his hip to. its great for the street theme
June 22nd, 2012
fav!!! freaking brilliant!!!
June 22nd, 2012
Brilliant! love it in b&w, like that two persons have there hands on the hip.
June 22nd, 2012
Fantastic street shot! Perfect in the B&W.
June 22nd, 2012
Love this Northy, great candid shot, and a great tribute to Winston : )
June 22nd, 2012
Nope no change needed, perfectly composed. Great shot.
June 22nd, 2012
The sign adds to your shot. It's perfectly fine the way it is composed and cropped. Fabulous!
June 22nd, 2012
Seems somehow much easier to look at this time round. Not sure why.
June 22nd, 2012
Geez, I didn't even notice the guy on the bench at first, till I read a comment. I like the sign (no unauthorized parking) with the dude parked underneath it. There are many different things going on in this photo, none of them distracting to me, just interesting.
June 22nd, 2012
Like the reflexiveness/reflexivity
June 22nd, 2012
Wow! You got so many stories going on here. Where to start. I think the sign should stay, esp since you have someone sleeping under the blanket. The worker is seems taken up by the plaque. It's lovely in BW.

That rounded building with the dome looks familiar. Where is this Toronto?
June 22nd, 2012
Great shot! You certainly have combined all the elements of the challenge in this entry! I tried a bit of street photography today and found it extremely difficult so am even more in awe of your work!
June 22nd, 2012
I like it a lot. Fav for me.
June 22nd, 2012
I did see this before. I would not have seen this the same way you did. I would have just walked on by or focused on just one of the great things going on here. You are doing so well with street shots!
June 22nd, 2012
I love this.. Favd x
June 22nd, 2012
I've only just looked at yesterday's shot and although I like the subtle colouring I think this has so much more drama and impact. It's fantastic for the street challenge. Fav for me too xx
June 22nd, 2012
@bobg tx Bob... yes, this is Toronto... the "dome" is city hall... it's in a couple other shots i've posted here... as has this particular corner to the south west of Nathan Phillips Square...
June 22nd, 2012
fantastic b&w... But I do have to say that is a strange place to sleep.
June 23rd, 2012
@tracywilliams Sadly, there ate many homeless folk who bunk down around city hall at night :(
June 23rd, 2012
@northy That is sad, my heart break for those who are doing it so hard. Makes you appreciate what you have a little more.
June 23rd, 2012
I really like this!
June 23rd, 2012
Nice street scene and b/w. I think the sign adds a slight humor to the photo.not that a person sleeping on the bench is humor but Authorized parking only and the man sleeping on the bench

Hi there, I am not sure what I am to do with my winning of the SPN challenge. I believe that entrys end today....But I probably should end it tomorrow because my time is ahead of most of the world. Also do I end the voting on Friday? My first challenge win :)
July 9th, 2012
@monika64 You'd have to go back to @38mm posts to see the deadline... I think I gave another 12 hours because I can't ever figure out whose time zone we're talking about :)

Leave the vote open as long as you like - as long as it closes and you can announce by next weekend...

I think this is right... I just went by what was done before!
July 9th, 2012
Oh wow, how hard is it to pick 5 finalists in SPN... I mean, what is the criteria, what I like? what fits the brief? I didnt know how to pick. Who am I to judge?...haha, that was hard.
