so i had this idea of something that i wanted to do, and i thought the displacement map filter in photoshop would make it work... but it wasn't working at all... so i thought i would try a basic displacement map exercise to see if i had the technique figured out... which i think i do... so now i have to figure out why it isn't working out for the other concept the way i want it to...
this probably looks better in colour, but it is just too chaotic for my brain to deal with... so b&w it is...
Nice attempt! Gavin Hoey's video is really good, I refer to it often. I find this filter to be "finicky". I have had great success with it, and I also have had great failures. Sometimes just a straight blending with a high contrast image does the trick.
@mikegifford tx Mike... i might try that other approach, but i don't think it will get me where i want to be... i do think i've figured out why what i'm trying to do isn't working though... and i have an idea for getting around it - might try again tomorrow...
I like what you've done even though it wasn't what you'd set out to do. One of my goals for this this is to master (or at least get better at) PSE. Have saved the link to my tutorials bookmark to try at a later date, thanks for sharing.
fun effect - I tried making my boots out of brick doing that technique, which was a pretty epic fail too - although I think I know what I did wrong (trying photoshop instructions on GIMP)
@tigerdreamer i'm not sure what it was originally intended to do, but it would let you do things like put a design on a t-shirt, or a tattoo on someone's face - basically takes a pattern or a texture and wraps it around a 3 dimensional figure...
I find this filter either works really well, or not at all - and I can never predict which way it's going to go until the end. :)
