i can't for the life of me figure out the trick to lighting the mist from the mini-humidifier... i'm not sure if the particles hang in the air differently from smoke, or what... all i can say is that it is completely hit and miss and unbelievably frustrating... i've tried lighting with the off camera flash from all directions... and nothing works consistently... suggestions?
Cool shot! For incense smoke, I had a friend point an LED flashlight into the smoke curls... I have never used a humidifier though, so not sure if that would work or not.
@monty147 tx Montez... Yes - that works for smoke... I just can't seem to get it to work for the mist... At least not consistently... Yesterday I had the flash behind the subject, pointing towards the camera... But that didn't work for this shot... I tried the flash from all angles and while a few images came out ok (like this one) most dud not... Most were very dark w only a few tendrils of mist showing, if any... I know in some cases my hand was probably blocking the light, but not all! I'm thinking that one key element is that you need to throw a LOT of light at this... More than for smoke... I'll give that a go in next few days...
I'd be pretty chuffed to have got a shot like that. I think you've done it just right. I've heard that food photographers find steaming dishes a challenge and that they will resort to cigarette smoke because it's denser but that strikes me as rather unpleasant!
You have achieved a good result already, and it's interesting to read all the suggestions on how to shoot mist. Must try it today, it looks as though this will be a cold and rainy Sunday with nothing much to do.
I have attempted posting a challenge for this week's F-word - hope it's OK.
have no idea how to help lol
