yesterday i went for a walk taking both the sony nex7 and the olympus tg-2... i remain quite impressed with the tg-2 and am again working my way towards upgrading to the tg-4 which allows for shooting RAW... i have this vague notion that i will be more likely to carry it with me and will therefore shoot more... but then, i said that about the iPhone and that hasn't really worked out...
Great shot - I once had the idea of carrying my camera with me too, but I soon realised that not everyone carries skulls or flamethrowers so there was very little for me to photograph...
@taffy Tg is a p&s... NOT a replacement for DSLR, but I think I possibly a reasonable alternative to nothing - I rarely carry my camera to work because I'm already lugging my laptop wherever I go and there really isn't room even for the nex... My reluctance stems from the lack of full controls on the tg and my preferance to play w light... But really, for on the fly street shooting where the desire is to get the "correct" exposure, the tg probably is more than fine... Plus it's waterproof so no worries shooting in rain and slush... But definitely not a replacement for the DSLR or mirrorless...
Love this low PoV.
I carried my little Nikon P300 P&S around with me for ages - and it did me fine for street shots and the like. I did eventually get fed up with the IQ though - and limited editing options. In the end it totally got superseded by the X100...
Have you got the little pancake 16-50mm for your NEX? It's not exactly a great lens, but it makes the NEX seriously pocket-able.
@humphreyhippo hmmm... good point about the 16-50 - i should have the kit lens lying about somewhere... the IQ on the TG is pretty good all things considered, and presumably would be even better with RAW... dpreview has been pretty impressed by the TG in general, other than some aspects of handling (that don't bother me much) and limited manual controls... the thing i've found with on-the-fly shooting is that i tend to do better with auto controls... otherwise i end up playing around with settings and missing the shot, and falling behind everyone on the hike... last year when we went cycling in Croatia i only took the nex and even that was a hassle... having to stop my bike and pull it out of the carrier thing where it was kept safe... the TG would have been easier to keep at the ready and i'm certain would have done just as well for most things...
@northy From what I've seen of my friend's Canon p&s, if you're not cropping & don't want to edit, a modern P&S will do you in most situations (esp if it's mostly for web viewing). I think in the end, the X100 won out for me because I missed shallow DoF & the P300 just didn't have a big enough sensor.
This is very inspiring, @northy. I am playing with a loaner DSLR but keep leaning toward my P&S. I like the macro results I get with my P&S and feel guilty that I don't get the same results with the DSLR. After knowing you work with both (and get equal results), I know that I just need more practice and that it's okay to work with both. Thanks for that!
I like this and the TG did a good job. The camera that I carry everywhere because it's always in my bag (with my identity papers, cheque book, credit cards, etc.) is the little Sony RX100 Mk3. It has manual controls for most things, a pop-up EVF and amazing IQ, even at ISO 3200. I highly recommend it.
@vignouse hmmm.... that looks to be a really excellent little camera and i would totally love the manual controls and the evf...... but what sells me on the tg is that it's waterproof and shock proof... so i don't feel a need to baby it in any way... ugh... decisions!
@northy Well I dropped mine onto the pavement recently and it survived with just a chip out of the glass screen protector I had fitted... the body is magnesium alloy.
