I think this is great. To critique, it feels to me like his shoulder should be slightly out-of-focus - to match with the rest of the jacket. The snow in the hair is a magic touch.
I think it's a wonderful shot, very natural. What I do to most of my portraits is focus on the eyes. To me I would try and lighten the circles slightly in post under his eyes and make the eyes themselves pop a bit more. If you are not sure how I can tell you on PSE 10 :) but the pic itself is great.
@newbie tx Stacey... i actually do know how to do that in PSE... i brighten eyes and brush teeth on a regular basis... guess i could have brightened his face a bit as well... it always amazes me what a difference it makes when i do :)
@northy I don't really think his face needs brightening, there seems to be enough light, just lighten the under eye circles, I find almost everyone gets them, young or old. I always think it brightens everything up just to reduce them slightly. You always want to keep a bit of shadow or lines to keep it natural though.
It is a super portrait, feels quite natural and you have captured something of his character. Of course it could do with more effort at concentrating the light where you want it - under the eyes perhaps and not on the back of the coat - but in messing about with the light you risk taking away exactly that which makes this shot a bit special.
