They are both great - I must admit I like the colour one better. I think it lends itself to the way the photo is focused in the foreground. That, and because of the virtual "B&W" along the track and into the distance, it looks like a half and half!
my! you did a Michael Elliott! @michaelelliott :-) aha! you were in the last car or first car of the train! whew! i love this! are you going to submit this?
@summerfield last car... taken as we were leaving the station... i'm going to wait until next week to decide what to submit... i imagine i will have a few collected by then... have several more ideas of scenes / angles to attempt so we'll see...
I like the color for submission, although I love your b/w's I think they may be too gritty for the subway commission. My experience with political types are they are a bit delusional and have convinced themselves that everyone loves to use their rail systems to commute and it is a happy shiny place. That may be true in Toronto but definitely not true in NYC!
I like the perspective from over the tracks. Its not the usual POV. Very well done, again. The color version is good but the bw does have more impact for sure.
Can you dial down the diffused light filter? (I don't know how efex works). The composition is fab, though. I love all the bird scare decals...but I'm a nerd like that.
Okay. I actually don't know which one I like better. I love this. (I haven't read the other suggestions yet so will do that now but I have none myself. Another fav.
I prefer the mono shot, because all the other editing supports the monochrome conversion.... what kind of photos they have in their current pamphlets ? That could give you some sense what they are looking for... I personally would love a subway pamphlet with your noir shots in it, but maybe they are too edgy... They might want to make the subway look very inviting = lot of light and color, with some human element (kids for bonus points). Then there has to be movement, preferably trains. Because that gives a sense, that they really do what they should do. Do they have a logo with colors, or a color theme in the stations ? Maybe you could use those colors creatively, as your palette in the shots... How about shots from floor level, showing just shoes and a train motion blur as a background ? You could also shoot people who work there, I bet they have recognizable uniforms... maybe helping out a passenger. That would create a positive vibe they'd want, and increase your chances.
@janim tx for all these great ideas Jani... i think you have a really good sense of what sells... light and inviting and super friendly and helpful....
have to laugh about the floor shot idea tho... i had the same idea, and took one this morning... and ended up with a LOT of hairy legs ;p (it's sweltering here today and everyone was in shorts!)...
to answer your questions, colours are red and white, and so yeah - good idea to see if i can isolate them... the rules include "no recognizable" people so have to be a bit careful, but i agree that a human element seems warranted, so trying to figure out how to make that work... biggest issue right now is that i have limited time so can't spend too much time lurking in hopes of the "right" shot coming thru... and at the end of the day, i *think* i would prefer to be rejected as being too edgy than doing a fluffy shot and getting accepted :)
feel free to get carried away at any time - your insight is always appreciated!
@northy It's ok to sell out every once in a while ... ;) Just kidding, stay true to yourself while keeping the goal in mind and see what happens. Magic, most likely :) ....btw, hairy legs would be edgy ... :)
I love the b&w for it's stark beauty but I think the wide range of comments are correct in that the corporate need is probably more inclined to light, bright, friendly, and colorful. Your more 'usual' subway shots are far too strong & artistic to be "commercial"
