@summerfield@quixoticneophyte i can't get the light to come out as nice on this one, and i think a slightly lower pov would be better... not sure i am a huge fan of the sweep of snow on the left, and not sure that the angle would work if i tried to avoid it when i go back... thoughts?
I like this composition better as well. I think you needed to focus further back into the scene to get the 'hyperfocal distance' and get the back buildings in focus too. But I love the colors and the wide feel!
@archaeofrog i NEVER manage to get that right, Katie... not sure if i'm doing it wrong, or just not getting the right focal point, but it seems if i don't focus on the foreground, the foreground ends up being blurry in ways that i don't like... will have a go with focus stacking next time around...
wonderful,... just wonderful! I would only lower the POV a little to avoid the stump touching the lights. Was your focus point on the front or middle of the stump?
Compositionally, this one is getting there! I'd take a few more steps to the left again. Tone wise the other one is bang on! The log on the right is definitely the go for me. That's a huge amount of white stuff on the left though. I do like the sweep of the bay. I'd play with more sky and less white stuff, taking various captures in height and angle, from really low to quite high, always trying to keep the log down low in the frame, unless you were able to get it absolutely isolated and well away from the lights. I'm always surprised by how just the most subtle change of POV at the wide end of a lens can change things so much in regard of final composition.
I know you'll knock this one out the park when you go back.
I love the tones so much more on this version. I find the item on the right to be less distracting in this version. I love lights and reflections and they seem to be more prominent in this version. Well done!
I much prefer this one despite the empty expanse of snow, the reflections get a better chance here.
Maybe you could haul another log down to fill the space ;)
