Calverton Mine Car number 3

The plaque on the mine car informs us that:-
Calverton Colliery 1952 – 1999
This mine car was number 3 and was known as a Calverton mine car because of the type of coupling it had. It was used to supply materials from the surface to various coalfaces, development headings and other workings in the mine.
Built to last they were extremely robust and very few were ever damaged beyond repair. There were approximately 300 at the mine shortly before its closure in November 1999.
This mine car was recovered from Patching’s Art Centre where it had fallen into disrepair. Mine cars were loaded with various materials. It’s number, in this case 3, would be recorded so that they could be traced during transit. Once they were emptied they would have been filled with coal, dirt or scrap (steel / wood) and returned to the surface through the many miles of tunnels.
This mine car was salvaged and restored by Calverton Colliery Memorial Trust in 2010. Mounted on this plinth it is a fitting tribute to Calverton Colliery and its workforce and was formally unveiled on 2nd October 2011
