The name derives from the Old English Maethel or Maede. Meaning assembly or speech ac, meaning Oak tree; thus meaning ‘moot-oak’, an oak tree where meetings are held. In the Doomsdat Book 1086 it was recorded asMesiach and in 1196 as Matlac.
