Canary Girls

Painted on a wall in Beeston. Many women in the area worked at the National Shell Filling Factory nearby in Chilwell. There is a memorial to the women in Attenbourgh churchyard- A nearby information sign, Hard to read in yellow on a background of empty shell cases;

In 1918 at the National Shell Filling Factory 184 people were killed and further 250 injured when 8 tons of TNT exploded
The 1st of July (2018) marks the centenary of this event

'Canary Girls Term', The TNT used had the adverse effect of poisoning the operators, which would turn their skin and hair a yellow colour.

I love this mural.
