This building should be conserved with as much commitment as the main homestead. It is one of an era and once lost will only remain in grannys' folklore.
How true PerryFair, these really are from a bygone era. most modern homes have more than one inside loo, definitely no outside loo. great image Babs :-)
That's interesting - ours was called a privy - a bucket under a wooden seat with a plentiful supply of newspaper - but that was in my grandmother's day BUT I still remember it!
@beryl Thanks Beryl. Pretty hot in summer and cold in winter I should imagine. The only problem with the open air is that it lets in the red backs and the brown snakes too.
@ethelperry@hermann Thanks. I think it will be there for a while as all the outbuildings on the homestead are well looked after. Apparently Thunderbolt the bush ranger lived at Tocal for a while too and had a cottage on the property.
@leestevo I suspect it was only used by the staff on the property though as it is quite a way from the homestead. Thunderbolt's cottage is close by, so maybe he used it on occasion.
@quietpurplehaze My Nanna had an outside loo in Yorkshire too, but it did have a flush at least it did in later years. Maybe not when it was first installed though.
@gamelee Thanks Lee. Pretty hot in summer and bloody freezing in winter I shouldn't wonder. Then there is the snakes and the spiders to contend with too. Dangerous business back then.
@creampuff The cold draught in winter would be a bit of a worry, but in the summer when the temperatures can get up to 40 degrees C that would be another story.
@scarybird@april16@dianeburns@golftragic@888rachel@tracelee@lilminimonka@terryliv Thanks everyone. this was as close as I got, I should imagine there are a few redbacks in there and maybe the odd snake wandering through too. You would need plenty of ventilation in summer I should imagine. Winter could be a bit chilly though.
@lafish I think I would stick with the field. There could be redback spiders in there and the occasional brown snake too I shouldn't wonder. Safer in the field!
@eyesmile@angelar I wouldn't be using it I can tell you. Probably riddled with red back spiders and snakes. I think I would be off in the bushes. ha ha.
