This is a photo of Special Ted and as you can see he is rather battle scarred. He has been my teddy since I was born and I hope I have fared better than he has.
When my girls were small Special Ted was always on hand to make them better when they had childhood ailments. I used to tell them 'You will be better soon, everyone knows that Special Ted can cure anything.' So it seems appropriate after I returned home from hospital yesterday that Special Ted was there to make me feel better too.
You will notice that at some time during his long life he had a sex change too, hence the dress. When my daughter Zoe was small she decided Special Ted was a girl, so it was then that he started wearing dresses.
About 18 years ago David suffered a heart attack and while he was wired up to machines etc in hospital, I said to him 'Is this a job for Special Ted.' He answered 'I reckon.' As David is still here to tell the tale you can see how good Special Ted's powers are.
PS Special Ted wasn't always completely bald. When I was about 4 years old I decided to cut his hair. I had just had my hair cut and I thought it was a good idea to give him a haircut too. I thought his hair would grow again. Oops!
OK, I'm going to sheepishly admit here that I am a bear collector. Vintage mostly, so I know a great bear when I see one, and Special Ted is without question a great bear. You timing is a little uncanny as I just pulled the trigger on a great Steiff limited edition today, pictures of which will likely be appearing here quite soon. Glad to hear the Ted is taking good care of you and getting you on the mend! Oh, and that's a great capture!
I have my Ted too, how wonderful that we all have our bears and Ron @stray_shooter don't be sheepish... bears are wonderful and awesome to collect
Babs, hope you are OK x
Hoping you are feeling much better Babs! We have a "Bob the Bear" in the family however siblings have fought over who owns him........I'm not even sure where he is or who he is with right now!
Wonderful story. We have my husband's bear that he's had since he was born and I have one that is my brother's - https://365project.org/salza/365/2012-04-28
Packed in a box is mine. We actually have a few hundred bears in total, made from many different materials, and in all shapes and sizes
@maggiemae Thanks Maggiemae. Special Ted has had lots of adventures and I used to tell my girls of his adventures when they were small. He/she travelled the world with us and is indeed very special. He even has his own passport. http://365project.org/onewing/365/2016-10-18
@stray_shooter Thanks so much Ron. I hope your special Steiff bear become as special as Ted does to me. @taffy@kjarn@annied@yorkshirekiwi@pixiemac@gigiflower@nicolecampbell@bizziebeeme@paul10@salza@happysnaps Thanks everyone. I am fine. I just have to have ongoing investigations every two years to check that the hundreds of polyps in my stomach and colon don't turn into 'hot ones' I will get the results soon of the latest biopsies.
So many lovely stories of your special teds. Some of you will know just how Special Ted is to me and my family. Both sad and happy memories along the way.
He/she even had her own passport made by David when we came to Australia. http://365project.org/onewing/365/2016-10-18
Lovely tale of Special Ted. A real treasure.
Your story made me smile as I too have a similar Teddy who has been lovingly patched up & was given a haircut when I was about 5 yrs old !
@yorkshirekiwi Special Ted's paws were replaced long ago. His original paws were in a bad way and I had to knit him some knew ones with brown wool and stitch them on. He has had more surgery than I have. ha ha.
Reminds me of the lovely children's book The Velveteen Rabbit:
“Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'
Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.”
Well done, Special Ted. You've been making people better for years and you are still up to the job! Wishing you well and fingers crossed there are no 'hot ones' in the biopsies this time.
Childhood memories really do carry forward in our lives. I love your sweet fellow and I know he has the healing "touch". Glad you are home and in Ted's care.
@casablanca Yes he is a bit like the Velveteen Rabbit. It is one of our daughters favourite books and we still have a copy of it. We read the story to our girls so many times and every time managed to get through a box of tissues.
Teddies are really special. I still have both of mine, one handmade and one manufactured. After over 60 years, they're both rather threadbare and show the signs of many "operations" but I couldn't part with them. :)
That is such a lovely story of Ted's history and how wonderful that he has been with you through thick and thin, good and bad. And with his own passport too! I do hope your biopsy comes back with the all clear Babs.
A much loved family treasure with super powers beautifully captured in lovely colour and detail, lets hope he retains his powers for many years to come Babs:)
My teddy was my mother's and he is very well educated having gone to college with her and me! I should have passed him on to my younger son who always admired him but I just can't bear to part with him. I'm glad Special Ted is taking care of you now and hope the healing process goes quickly!
Aww, I think that is so sweet that you still have your childhood bear. I had a few dolls and stuffed mouse and a stuffed penguin when I was child, but I think they got donated when I got older... I wasn't so bothered about them anyway. My love were little whimsies - I used to save my pocket money up and buy a new one whenever I could. I hope you are recovering well Babs.
This reminds me of my brothers teddy who I rescued from the compost heap many years ago. I gave it back to him on his 65th birthday and he was so surprised. I must ask him if he still has it
just catching up Babs and hope everything has gone well for you. I adore your special Ted. He/she has done a wonderful job of looking after the family. I have an old ted too that I got when I was 4 and my mother used to make him dance on the end of the bed when I was sick
