Today's Newcastle photo was taken at the Memorial Walk. The walk was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in 1915 and the commencement of steel making in Newcastle, it acts as a magnificent memorial to the men and women of the Hunter who served their community and their country. On Anzac Day I will post a photo of one of the sculptures at the top of the walk.
The bus dropped us at the beginning of the walk at The Hill in Newcastle and we walked from the Strzelecki Headland, down the steps and along the beach path to Dixon Park which is just on the other side of the headland that you can see in the distance. At Dixon Park we had a picnic lunch.
If you look closely at the walkers in this picture you will see a chap wearing a hat, check shirt and blue shorts, that is David who is chatting to Jeannie another friend of ours as they stroll along.
@salza No we didn't have to walk back up the steps, but I have done the walk up the steps before. Much easier going down. We were dropped off from the bus at the top of the walkway and then it was downhill. We walked from the lookout to just beyond the furthest headland you can see in this picture to Dixon Park where we had a picnic lunch and that is where we were picked up again with the bus.
@kathiecb The only connection Kathie is that the walkway was built to commemorate the ANZAC landing in Gallipoli in 1915 and also the commencement of the steel industry in Newcastle in 1915. The ANZAC sculptures on the walk are made with steel from BHP in Newcastle.
